Casting on already..... PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE YOU START!

Hi Everyone,

Jeanie and I just couldn't wait any longer and cast on...

And this is what we experienced:

knitting the edge on needles US 1 is sooo tight!
I changed the needle size to US 2, that fits me, but to my opinion it's still too tight.
So I'll frog it again and will cast on more stitches, leaving less increases above the edge, so the number of stitches above the edge will stay the same.

Of course it's also a possibility (Jeanie wrote this) to simply start casting on the number of stitches above the edge and once the sweater is finished, simply knit the rims (or edges) upside down on the sweater.

love,
Astrid.

Thanks for that Astrid. I got my yarn yesterday and I loved, I could not touch it that much because I have a bad cold, but I could not resist to play with it a little.

I had a question, did you do a swatch before or not? I usually knit kind of tight and need to go up 2 sizes, so I was going to do the swatch in US 7 or maybe US8, they tell oyu to use the larger needle for the swatch not the smaller one.

Forgot to ask, are you all using 24 inches or 32 inches for the length of the circular needle?

I use a 24" circular, as I find that easier, but of course it's up to you if you prefer a 32"...

I did not do a swatch (I know, I should have).

Always do the swatch with the needles you will use for the project, otherwise there's not much use to do a swatch :)

Hope this helps?

love,
Astrid.

Bottom Edge. I am even considering two methods. Using same size needles as the body and doing ribbing, or using the same size needles and doing a picot hem like you do on socks. One other way I am thinking will work is to cast on with waste yarn like good old Red Heart. Knit a few rows. now start the sweater and when i get it done go back and pick up the stitches that are held by the waste yarn and rip out the waste yarn and knit the bottom going down. I have that A shaped body and I do not need a tighter hem to keep out the bitter cold. I provide a tight hem all by myself.

I also could not wait!! (red face). I used size 2 needles and worked the edging hem as written except for knitting the hem together with the body at the end. (I picked up the cast on stitches with a teeny tiny circular and knit each one with the corresponding stich on my working needle. Very fiddly, but VERY BEAUTIFUL on the inside.) I must admit that my wrists took a beating from the size 2 needle used for the edging, but I think it was worth it. It's absolutely gorgous and stretches very nicely.

Did you cast on only the stitches for the hem or did you cast on the total number of stitches so that you do not have to do any increases when you switch needles?

Aurita, I followed the pattern as written. I'm knitting the medium size, even though I normally would do the large. I think the sweater is oversized after looking at the measurements. I had to convert the metric to inches before it made any size, and i believe that the medium will be at 47" circumference before the bands. Does anyone else think this is the case?

Cindy
Thanks and yes you are right the medium size works out to be 47 inches

I also knit tight, Aurita, so I did a swatch using US 7 and am getting 5.5 rather than 5 st. per inch. However, I did a flat swatch, not knit in the round and not with two colors, so I have no idea how accurate it is. Still, I think I'm going to use US 7 because, at worst, my sweater will be 41.5" rather than 44" (size small)and that's fine with me. I haven't decided what needle size for the Edge (maybe US5?). I guess that is why we do gauge swatches. This time, I got between 5.25 and 5.5 sts per inch using number US 6 (go figure) and when I tried the 7, I did not like the feel of the fabric (it was too loose), so I think I will go with the 6 and do the medium size, with that gauge it should come out at around 43.6 to 45.7. Even though my frame is small my but sticks out, it is around 41 inches, so this size will be somewhat lose in that area.

One piece of advice, I think you need to check your gauge in the round, it is different. Some people do the sleeves and use it as gauge, I don't.
What I do is to knit flat but when I get to the end of the row, I move all of the stitches to the other side of the needle and leave a pretty long tail that hangs well past the swatch and knit again, that way you are simulating knitting in the round (you are knitting all the time). I do not cut the yarn at each row end, that way you can unravel and use it in the garment later on.

Ok for the edge, I decided to use US 2, I tried and is not that tight, what I will do is do what somebody suggested, do only 10% less stitches, that is instead of the 192 that they suggest to cast on for the medium size, I will cast on 216, that is 10% less than the final 240. Hopefully that will be ok, I will keep you posted
